An essential part of scientific training is learning to communicate new findings in manuscripts and theses. But access to scientific writing training, mentoring, and support varies widely, and many early career scientists report a need for more intensive help in developing their skills.
As part of a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Guidance for Trainees Grant, the Genetics Society of America and BioKansas have designed a program to provide early career scientists with experience in how to navigate the process of scientific writing—specifically manuscript preparation and thesis writing, delivered using a virtual platform. This enables participation regardless of institutional barriers, geographic location, family care responsibilities, or financial limitations.
This program is designed to be a new model of scientific writing training for graduate students, postdocs, and newly appointed faculty. The training will be provided virtually through multiple tracks to meet the individual needs of participants. The program provides valuable training and practical experience on how to navigate the process of scientific writing, time management, goal setting, data management, data visualization and more.
Graduate students often report a lack of support related to the writing of their thesis. These concerns range from poor project planning skills, insufficient prioritization, limited mentor support, to inadequate writing abilities. This track uses a community centered approach to support graduate students through the thesis writing process.
Audience: 2nd & 3rd year graduate students
Duration: multi-year
A strong publication record is essential for the attainment of grant funding and tenure track faculty positions. To successfully transition to independence from a postdoc position requires a strong foundation of skills, including manuscript writing. Through this track participants are equipped with the necessary skills to efficiently move their discoveries from the research bench to publication.
Audience: Senior graduate students & postdocs
Duration: 4 months
The challenges encountered by scientists vary over the span of their careers. One consistent challenge is often lack of time or poor time management, which impacts the ability to move research findings to publication. Through this track, participants utilize a community-based accountability network to efficiently complete manuscripts for publication.
Audience: Postdocs and early career faculty
Duration: 2.5 months
This two-part abbreviated workshop series provides early career scientists with a deeper understanding of how to create effective visualizations for their data and improve their manuscript drafts.
Audience: Graduate students and postdocs
Duration: 5 hours
