This series is designed to prepare early career scientists to submit effective and personalized application materials. Whether preparing to enter the job market, competing for a fellowship, or applying for grad school – this series is for you!

Member institutions are provided the opportunity to schedule 3 sessions annually either virtually or in-person for their students and postdocs to attend at no cost. Program offerings are also available to any non-member organization for a small fee.

BioKansas hosts monthly professional development webinar offerings that students and postdocs from member institutions can attend at no cost. Non-member students and postdocs can register for these webinars at a cost of $15-$25 per session.

All workshops can be tailored for the career level of the audience and length of time requested.

Who is the course for?

This course is designed to meet the professional needs of all early career scientists – from undergraduates to postdocs.

Learning Path

In this session, participants learn how to strategically craft a personal narrative. This workshop is designed for participants creating personal statements for graduate school, training program, fellowship, funding, and award applications. Due to the writing intensive nature and high degree of personal feedback provided, this program capacity is limited.

In this session, participants learn about why diversity statements are becoming an important determinant in hiring, the qualities of an effective diversity statement for a range of life histories and experiences, as well as best practices and common pitfalls. Participants have an opportunity to discuss their experiences and explore how to highlight them in a diversity statement.

In this session, participants learn about the qualities of an effective cover letter, how to tailor their letter for different organizations and sectors, and professionalism best practices. Participants are asked to bring a job description of interest to the session which they will use to identify focal points to incorporate in their cover letter.

For this session, participants are asked to draft a resume based on a job advertisement before the start of the session. The session begins with a brief lecture on how a resume differs from a Curriculum vitae, methods for choosing relevant experience with limited space, and how to frame experiences for non-academic roles. In the second half of the workshop, participants receive feedback on their resumes based on the accompanying job advertisements.
